Gulu City is fast becoming northern Uganda’s new commercial heartbeat — thanks to the Made in Africa Uganda (MIAU) hub. What began as a cluster of factories in Kapeeka has grown into a regional powerhouse for trade, manufacturing, and employment.
From Kapeeka to Gulu:
Uganda’s Manufacturing Revolution MIAU’s journey started in Kapeeka Industrial Park (Nakaseke District), home to over 30 factories producing textiles, ceramics, electronics, and food products. Those same goods are now available at the MIAU Gulu showroom — a one-stop center for wholesalers and traders. “We used to import things like socks and cooking oil,” says one representative. “Now we make them here — cheaper and better.”
Creating Jobs and Inspiring Entrepreneurs:
The Gulu branch currently employs over 40 Ugandans, and the number continues to grow. Beyond direct jobs, the hub supports transporters, wholesalers, and small business owners who rely on local supply chains. “This business has already created over 50 jobs,” says Dennis, MIAU’s sales manager. “It’s giving young people access to affordable goods and business opportunities.”
Gulu: Safe, Open, and Ready for Business:
Hon. Ambrose Honoria, the Resident City Commissioner for Gulu, praised MIAU’s role in transforming trade and employment across the region. “Gulu is one of the most peaceful cities in Uganda,” she said. “We have everything here — roads, railways, ministries, and an industrial hub that’s changing lives.” She also noted that local businesses now save significantly on transport and logistics since goods are readily available in Gulu, eliminating the need to ship from Kampala.
Building Bridges to Regional Trade:
The MIAU hub isn’t just for Uganda — traders from South Sudan and neighboring regions are also sourcing goods here. This regional trade connection is fueling new partnerships and export opportunities. “When you visit Gulu, you see where Uganda is heading — a self-reliant, industrious nation,” Hon. Ambrose emphasized.
Looking Ahead MIAU plans to replicate the Gulu model across Uganda — expanding to western and eastern regions to ensure every Ugandan has access to locally made, affordable, high-quality goods. “We welcome everyone to visit our Gulu showroom,” Dennis concludes. “Stop importing what we can make here — let’s build Uganda together.””
